How do repressive governments remain in power for many years? Does repression depend solely on military forces, security institutions and violence?
In the first part of this educational series, inspired by a quotation attributed to the French writer and philosopher Simone de Beauvoir, we explore how social relationships, influential individuals, economic networks and financial dependency can contribute to maintaining and reproducing power.
The video examines how access to employment, resources and essential services may become dependent on connections with those in power, allowing economic dependency to become a means of controlling people's behaviour.
It also distinguishes between individuals who face pressure because of poverty, fear or the need to support their families and those who knowingly participate in repression for personal gain.
The aim of this series is to promote public understanding of power, repression and the social and economic relationships that can sustain them.
